How to Find Community as a Queer Person

As human beings, we all need community. If you’ve recently come out, just moved to a new area, or you’re struggling to meet other queer people for another reason, this guide may help you to find the community you’re looking for.

Find community online

Digital platforms and online social networks can help you to connect with like-minded folk, in person and online. You can find out what’s happening in your local queer community, join groups related to your interests, and discover LGBTQ+ events in your area. If being openly queer isn’t an option for you, online communities can help you to feel seen and supported.

Join a team

Exercise can improve your physical and mental wellbeing, and it’s also a great way to make friends. Try searching online for an LGBTQ+-inclusive gym or sports team in your area. If you’re unable to join in person, there are plenty of virtual, queer-friendly gyms and online fitness classes.

Embrace queer media

Reading LGBTQ+ stories, watching movies about LGBTQ+ people, and listening to music by queer artists can help you to find a sense of belonging. Seeing positive experiences portrayed in the media can be incredibly validating, and can help you to feel hopeful about the future.

Volunteer for an LGBTQ+ charity

Volunteering is a powerful and rewarding way to connect with other LGBTQ+ individuals, while

supporting and empowering the queer community. Look for opportunities in your area, from answering calls on a helpline, to fundraising and assisting with events.

Attend Pride events

Pride month is one of the best times to connect with the queer community, with parades and parties happening all over the world. If you’re unable to take part in person, you’ll find lots of events online - from workshops, talks and readings, to comedy nights and speed dating.
